Introduction from sermon 'Prepare for Spiritual War' by Helen Devenish Sunday 4th June 2017
Miss Joy and Mr Worldly have recently accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour (or have they?). Miss Joy is just so excited to be walking with Jesus. She is reading her Bible every day, her faith is growing and she is also growing in truth, love, Joy and peace. She can't stop telling people about what God has done for her. She used to be depressed all the time, but that's gone. She has so much joy now as she knows she is right with God.
Mr Worldly accepted Jesus too, but he let the cares of this world come into steal his joy. He put his Bible on a shelf and never really read it. He kept looking at sinful images on-line and never showed any self-control. He felt guilty but instead of getting right with God he kept sinning which opened up the door for depression and anger and self hatred to name a few. He lost sight of his future, felt hopeless and became lazy, careless, thoughtless and gave up trying to do the right thing.
So what was going on in the spiritual realm during this time?
Miss Joy was sharpening her sword (the Bible) with constant use. As she did this her shield of faith grew, as faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Her love for the truth was like a belt around her waist and as she actively shared the Gospel with her friends her feet were covered with the preparation of the Gospel of peace. She had her helmet of salvation firmly in place to guard her mind and thoughts in Christ Jesus and she had on her breastplate of righteousness, knowing she had been made right with Christ. She was ready for any spiritual battle that came her way.
Mr Worldly on the other hand rarely opened his Bible so his sword was weak, his faith wasn't growing so his shield was also small and weak. His helmet was more like a beanie as he never learnt to take his thoughts captive and he had no desire for the truth, or righteousness or for sharing the Gospel. He was ill- equipped for spiritual warfare.
One day Miss Joy and Mr Worldly faced a big trial. Their enemy Satan came against them as a flood. Miss Joy overcame the whiles of the devil as she was fully clothed in her armour and she knew how to wield her sword and fight her enemy, the devil. Mr Worldly on the other hand was not prepared for war and he became a casualty in this spiritual war.
Are you like Miss Joy or Mr Worldly?
Ephesians 6:10-18
